    Oil Change in Spokane, Washington

There are different types of motor oil, and your vehicle manufacturer will specify which type to use on your car. Even oil used in diesel or gasoline vehicles uses varied types of oil. But when it’s time for an oil change, the process is the same for any car, regardless of the model and make.

When you go for an oil change, your mechanic will:

    • Change your car’s motor oil and use the recommended type of oil as a replacement, such as synthetic blend, high mileage oil, or conventional oil
    • Replace and dispose of properly the used oil filter
    • Inspect all other filters, such as cabin filters, air filters, etc.
    • Top up other vital fluids

It may look simple, but engine oil is crucial for your engine performance, and if issues related to it are ignored, they can cause serious engine problems.

    Why Is Engine Oil Important?

Engine oil has a limited lifespan and it gets dirtier over time. Its main purpose is to lubricate your engine’s moving parts, such as pistons and valves, preventing them from grinding against each other and causing friction, which leads to wear and tear. Oil also helps cool down the engine by absorbing heat from the engine components, thus preventing overheating.

    Why Oils Break Down?

Oils become less effective over time as they break down and become contaminated with dirt, dust particles, and debris from the engine. These impurities can damage your engine by clogging up the oil filter or creating sludge, which reduces its ability to lubricate effectively.

When Should You Change Your Oil?

The frequency of changing your car’s oil depends on several factors, such as:

    • The type of motor oil used
    • The age and mileage of your vehicle
    • The driving conditions you experience (stop-and-go traffic, extreme temperatures, etc.)

Changing your engine oil every 3 months or every 3,000 miles is recommended, whichever comes first. However, with modern advancements in engine technology and oils, some manufacturers suggest longer intervals between oil changes.

What Parts Are Used in Pumping Oil Around the Engine?

    Oil Pan

The oil pan is where the engine oil is stored. It acts as a reservoir for the oil and contains a drain plug that allows the old oil to drain easily during an oil change.

    Oil Pump

The oil pump draws oil from the pan and pumps it through the engine, ensuring that all moving parts are lubricated adequately. The pump also maintains consistent pressure to prevent air pockets or lubrication gaps.

    Oil Filter

As mentioned earlier, your mechanic will replace the old filter with a new one during an oil change. The filter helps remove impurities and contaminants from the motor oil before it reaches critical engine components.

    How to Check Your Oil

    1. Park your car in a level spot and turn off the engine.
    2. Open the hood of your car and locate the dipstick (usually labeled “oil” or has an oil can symbol).
    3. Pull out the dipstick, wipe it clean with a cloth or paper towel, then reinsert it all the way back into its tube.
    4. Pull out the dipstick again and check the oil level between the two marks on the dipstick. If it’s below or near “L,” add more oil.
    5. If your oil is too dark, cloudy, or smells burnt, it’s time for an oil change.
    6. Add the recommended oil in small increments and recheck the oil level until it reaches “F” (full).
    7. After a few minutes, recheck the oil level against your dipstick to ensure it’s at the proper level.
    8. Screw the oil cap back on and close the hood.
